The opening ceremony at the Italian Pavilion took place on Saturday, May 1 in the presence of Environment Minister Stefania Prestigiacomo, Commissioner General for Expo Shanghai 2010 Beniamino Quintieri and Riccardo Sessa, Italy’s Ambassador to China.
The inauguration was also attended by Lucio Stanca, Managing Director of Expo 2015 spa.
The pavilion was visited by numerous authorities and famous people including the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Jan Pieter Balkenende, and Catherine Ashton, High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU.
From May 1 to October 31 the Chinese metropolis – with a population of over 20 million – will showcase the theme Better City, Better Life. The Expo focuses on sustainable urban development, the way that different cultures come together in our cities, new technologies, social communities and cities’ relationship with the countryside around them.
Italy will play a key role this historic event, with its own pavilion and a calendar of events intended to showcase Italy’s technological, cultural and artistic excellence before an international public.
The organisers consider the Italian pavilion one of the 7 most popular Expo pavilions: it was one of the pavilions that attracted the most visitors during the 6-day "soft opening" when over 1 million Chinese were offered an opportunity to preview the Expo.
The Italian Pavilion is a futuristic construction – the biggest pavilion after the host country’s – on 3 levels totalling more than 7 thousand square metres, completely tiled with Fiandre materials.
Designed to take visitors on a voyage through the Italy of technologies, design, culture, food, handcrafts and everything that makes the country famous the world over, the building is divided into a number of sections.
On the ground floor, a permanent exhibition presented in collaboration with Triennale di Milano, covering 5 exhibition halls and a large central courtyard, offers an evocative, dramatic representation of everything that is “Made in Italy”.
The first floor is divided into three temporary exhibition halls for art exhibitions, promotion of outstanding industries and representation of the great variety of Italy’s regions.
18 metres high, 7.000 square mt for the total exhibition space: Italy will be one of those countries present at high levels in the2010 Expo.
Our Pavilion will be a proper mini - city, with a precise reference to the one that will host the Expo but mostly to our country's mixed character: it represents us, our culture, our creativity, our extraordinary quality and the companies innovation that will contribute to make this huge exhibition space unique.
The world always expects the best from Italy in terms of originality. But we can manage to stand out also for the technical and scientific excellence of our companies.
