Italy holds a sad negative record in road safety. In response to this, the Provincial Government of Arezzo has decided to design a Road Education centre for the municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino, promoted by the Fondazione Monnalisa Onlus.
The structure is open to users from around the area and for anyone who wishes to educate their children in safe, careful driving.
The architectonic structure is conceived as a meeting place for parents, children and the teaching staff, with classrooms and conference halls, cafeteria and a restaurant, an important occasion for education and exchange between its various users, which also offers games and cultural events. The structure was designed to have a low environmental impact, as a piece of sustainable architecture, both in terms of materials, and systems, with energy saving devices powered by renewables.
The criteria guiding the design are all intended to promote wellbeing and safeguard the environment: BIOCOMPATIBILITY for wellbeing and salubriousness (the halls are roofed with a garden which thermally insulates them), ECOSUSTAINIBILITY for a low environmental impact throughout the building's lifecycle, using non-polluting or recycled/recyclable materials and a rainwater recycling plant, BIOCLIMATICITY, the use of natural, non-polluting materials (lime for the mortar and plaster, cork insulation, floors in ACTIVE titanium dioxide materials, which are antibacterial and anti-pollution).
This is energetically and environmentally efficient architecture, for which energy savings are a primary design criterion. The added value of such a design, as well as its high social value, is given by energy savings, reduced running costs and a low environmental footprint.
