H24 - The project can be defined as a methodological proposal for the requalification and refunctionalisation of large industrial or municipal service sites. In particular, the option of reorganising a large public transport vehicle depot, currently out of use, was taken into consideration.
The building goes back to the first decades of the twentieth century, and is composed of a reinforced concrete structure with large openings, with an overall surface area of 7,000 m2 + 2,800 m2 of outdoors service facilities; the structure is on two floors, one of which is underground, so that the available space in the interior is very large and has considerable functional and distributive flexibility.
The project is intended to create a system of public services which will give new life to the building; the title "H 24" refers to the total usage of the structure, with services which will be open round the clock; a large part of the structure may therefore be used for sports and fitness services, while another part may be used for recreational and cultural purposes (theatre, exhibitions, restaurants, etc.).
The user's perception of the structure must be immediate and total, and the project therefore provides for large, double-height spaces, as well as structural elements detached from the existing perimeter walls. A building inside the building, an architecture which exploits the entirety of the available space and levels.
In order to intensify the concept of an urban continuum, the project proposes to use materials and construction techniques typical of outdoors installations, such as green walls, large size ceramic wall tiles, urban furnishings in the waiting areas, etc. which are typical of the refurbishment of an industrial archaeology site.
