The project consists in the environmental and urban requalification of the Forte dei Marmi covered market area, for which a design competition was held in September 2011. The project in question took fourth place out of 109 submissions.

The subject of the competition was the creation of a new building housing covered market spaces, shops and social residences, in the very strategic and largely residential location at the edge of the town centre of Forte dei Marmi. The design started from the completion of the lot along a central north-south axis which forms the backbone of the entire project, and creates an open field of view towards the Apuane mountains, which are the emblematic geographic feature of the territory.

The space is defined by two lines of buildings, connected by an overhead walkway, with different features. The main block, which houses the covered market, is characterised by a transparent shell with sun shades.

The other block, from the roof of which vertical green spaces fall, is intended for shops, and has the elongated shape of a jetty, oriented so as to connect the sea symbolically with the Apuane mountains. The roof of the building can be walked on, for residences and a panoramic view. The underground floor houses the car parks, while the ground floor square has been completely pedestrianised, in order to restore it to the city centre. The heart of the project, apart from the buildings, are the open public spaces: the ground floor square, which will also host the weekly market, and the upper floor terrace, with its green areas and a waterfall to cool passersby during the summer. The finishings therefore have a special importance. The project specifies products such as Active Quarzite Blanca Extreme and Active Quarzite Ceniza Extreme for the flooring of the ground storey square, and Geologica Essenze Rare Extreme for the terrace flooring, which recalls the wood of jetties, being a resistant, easy to clean material suited to open spaces. These materials respect the genius loci, and make the space easily integrable with the urban context and the local culture.

Special attention has also been paid to the energy performance of the building, with the aim of making it eco-sustainable.
