The scope of the Helsinki South Harbour project is to requalify the zone connecting the city centre to the sea with a more uniform and significant landscape for people arriving at Helsinki from the sea: in this way, Helsinki South Harbour will become the new gate to the city. The underlying theme of the project is the old coastline, which returns to the inhabitants a historical feature of their territory and becomes the backbone to which the various architectonic solutions are attached. A variety of cycle and pedestrian paths are provided to connect the two banks of the port and give cyclists and pedestrians ample space for movement and to enjoy the panoramic view without interfering with the traffic of the city

and its port. All structural features of the context have been borne in mind and great emphasis has been placed on highlighting the panoramas and visual relations with the city's major monuments. The design embodies the idea of an ICEBERG, and each zone of the port has been handled with respect for its characteristic features.

The Park and the new Makasiini terminal feature a system fo terraces connecting the historic Tähtitorninmäki park with sea level; the market square and covered market are now an extension of the Esplanaden, the green area designed on various levels, which valorises the prospective axis and the presence of the market itself. The covered market square is transformed into an open space to house the city's multifarious urban culture. The old Kanava terminal becomes the New Helsinki Museum, born from the concept connecting rigid opaque elements with free-form transparent elements, while leaving the perception of the individual parts intact. The new K6 building cuts into the building, creating a frame for the view of Valkosaari Island. A covered urban space has been created, which can be used all year round.
