The CTBUH - Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the research institute founded in Chicago in 1969 to interpret the rapid changes in progress in tall building design and engineering, has assigned the Award of Excellence 2022 to the De Castillia 23 building in Milan, in the “Best Tall Building under 100 meters” category. The redevelopment of De Castillia 23, by Progetto CRM, returned to the city of Milan an innovative architecture comprising two buildings, respectively with heights of 53 and 15 metres.

A key element of the project is the prismatic façade with triangular windows creating a rhombus pattern that gives it a dynamic appeal. The eco-active Active Surfaces® ceramics by Fiandre were chosen for the façade and, specifically, the Core Shade surfaces in textures Cloudy Core Active and Sharp Core Active. The ceramics were applied using the ventilated façade system by Granitech® with visible joints. The decision was made to use porcelain stoneware both for the façades and the terraces and outdoor paved areas due to the beautiful appearance, high technical performance and lasting strength of this material.

The green philosophy of the De Castillia 23 project can also be seen in the chosen ceramics: Active Surfaces® are “eco-active”: with antibacterial, antiviral, anti-pollution and anti-odour properties, they are easily cleaned and sanitised simply by the rain. These characteristics have earned the De Castillia 23 the reputation of being a “smog-eating” building.
